Abdominal Pain by Liver Disease
The liver is the body’s vital organ that plays essential roles in metabolism including energy production, food digestion/absorption, and toxicity removing. Liver diseases or dysfunction can cause serious systemic problem for the body. Liver diseases can be caused by infections, alcoholism, toxicity (by drug or by toxic agents), malnutrition, and tumors.
Symptoms include:
Yellowish eye or skin (jaundice): due to high blood bilirubin or yellowish pigments caused by liver dysfunction.
Abdominal pain and swelling: The liver itself is large and located in the upper abdomen, but is covered under the rib-cage. Therefore, the normal liver cannot be palpated with fingertips. The enlarged liver at early stage may not have any sign or symptoms. As it progresses, enlarged liver may be palpated at upper right abdomen.
Nausea & vomiting due to the malabsorption by the liver diseases
There may be more systemic signs and symptoms associated with liver diseases.
