Asthma is the medical condition of the airway narrow and, therefore, is a common cause of shortness of breath. Other symptoms include wheezing, chest tightness, and cough often without sputum. If the cough produces sputum, the sputum is frothy, clear and white. Coughing or wheezing attacks can be worsened when accompanied by a respiratory infections, such as a cold or the flu.
