Methemoglobinemia is a medical condition that the blood contains high level of abnormal hemoglobin, methemoglobin. The hemoglobin carries oxygen from the lung to the rest of the body. High levels of methemoglobin decrease the available oxygen to the body. Methemoglobinemia can be present at the birth (inherited), or acquired from a chemical or drug.
Symptoms include shortness of breath, cyanosis, malaise/dizziness, and loss of consciousness. In severe cases, there may be slow growth (development delay), seizure, and coma.
