Bacterial infection of lung can inflame and damage the lung and airways with pus, fluid and debris. Therefore, the cough in the infection is productive with sputum. In more severe cases, there are large quantities of sputum, often sticky and purulent sputum. This feature of the sputum is the indication of bacterial infection.
