Any disease or medical condition which injuries the liver can cause the cirrhosis. Therefore, Cirrhosis is often the advanced or late stage of liver diseases. The liver is the body’s vital organ that plays essential roles in metabolism including energy production, food digestion, and toxicity removing. Blood from intestines including the esophagus and the stomach need to go through the liver by the portal system. The cirrhosis can get the portal system backed up, and causes esophageal and gastric varices (dilated or engorged veins), which may cause esophageal and gastric bleeding.
