Parathyroid Adenoma

A parathyroid adenoma is a benign tumor of the parathyroid glands that are small glands located near or at the back of the thyroid gland and produce parathyroid hormone (PTH). Because of the relative small size of glands, there may not have noticeable change or only moderate swelling in the thyro9id area. Since PTH helps control the amount of calcium and phosphorus in the body, the symptoms include muscles pain, malaise or mental changes such as depression, in the most cases, parathyroid adenoma is recognized only when there is bone pain/fractures, or kidney stone. Parathyroid adenoma is more often seen in the elderly (age>60) and women.
