Sputum is mucous material and liquid from the lung that is coughed up from the airways. It is often confused with saliva that is produced from the salivary gland in the mouth.  Productive cough with sputum usually indicate a medical condition.  The appearance or smell of sputum may vary, depending on the type and severity of the diseases.
